Health Promotion Schools Team 2018/2019

Comhghairdeas leis na páistí agus na múinteoirí ar an bhFoireann Healthy Schools a fuair an bhratach Healthy Schools an tseachtain seo!

Congratulations to the children and teachers on the Healthy Schools team who obtained the Health Promoting Schools flag this week! Many thanks to Ms. O' Brien and Ms. Brandon for all their hard work, and to all the children who worked so hard on this initiative. Well done!

Our HPS team have been working hard to promote a healthy and happy way of life in SN Bhaile Chláir! The children have participated in many initiatives like the Food Dudes programme, Healthy Lunchbox competition, Playworks at break times, Healthy Hero Half Hour, Weaving Wellbeing programme and the Friends for Life programme. Another important and wonderful part of school life in SN Bhaile Chláir are our school assemblies based on the theme of kindness. The whole school community comes together and we focus on the promotion of kindness throughout our school. We celebrate this theme through song, poetry and acknowledging achievements of the children both inside and outside of school!

HPS Team 2016 / 2017

Scoil Cothaithe Sláinte - Health Promoting School

Having achieved the Health Promoting Schools flag in 2016, a great foundation has been laid for the school to build on and develop. We are setting our action plan in motion with the wonderful help of our HPS team to achieve our goals. We are focused and committed to achieving and retaining our HPS status in Claregalway NS for 2019. But ultimately, our aim is that when we achieve these goals, that they will remain as long-standing goals for our whole school community. The health and wellbeing of our children are paramount to our schools caring and nurturing environment.

Our key mottos include:

  • Promoting the health and well-being of our pupils and the school community
  • A healthy body, a healthy mind.
  • Move well, move often.
  • ‘In a world where you can be anything, be Kind’
  • Making the healthier choice the easier choice’

Food Dudes

S.N. Bhaile Chláir na Gaillimhe participate in the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme.

What is Food Dudes?

Food Dudes is a programme developed by the University of Wales, Bangor, to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. In large-scale studies in schools in England and Wales and pilot studies in schools in Ireland, the Programme has been shown to be effective and results long lasting across the primary age range, regardless of gender, school size, geographic and socio-economic factors.

Why Food Dudes?

It is ultimately designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets, and to create a healthy eating culture within schools.

The programme in Ireland received a “counteracting obesity” award from the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2006.

The programme is managed by Bord Bia and to date over 3,100 primary schools have participated in the National Roll Out which will be completed in 2014.

Funding has been made available by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the EU School Fruit Scheme for schools that previously ran Food Dudes to implement it for current students at junior level including specified tasting days for senior classes.

Who are the Food Dudes?

The Food Dudes are four young super-heroes: Charlie, Tom, Raz and Rocco.

By eating their favourite fruit or vegetables, the Food Dudes gain special powers which enable them to save the world and the Life Force from a gang of baddies:

The Junk Punks. General Junk and his side-kicks Miss Demeanour and Master Disaster, are trying to drain the energy of the world by depriving it of nutritious fruit and veg.

With their special powers, given to them by carrots, tomatoes, raspberries and broccoli, the Food Dudes feed the Life Force and foil the Junk Punks.
